We propose to host a province wide virtual fish lunch with 40 key stakeholders from across the province from Indigenous, provincial, regional, municipal governments, NGO's, for-profit sector, and the school community (students, parents, teachers, elders). The event will be available for all members of the public to join in however, only the 40 invited participants will be provided a meal of fish to consume while meeting for lunch (which is both symbolic and experiential). While the fishery has deep roots in NL, building bridges between this active fishery and a concurrently active and passionate focus on school food systems has its challenges. Even in this fishing province, conversations about food security and food systems thinking have shared a trend seen elsewhere that the fishery is often left off the table for discussion. This event is meant to foster more dialogue and action to engage the public on how to address the issue of bringing young people closer to the sea by connecting our diet to the sea.
