Harnessing the Power of a River to Heat a Proposed Swimming Pool in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s

The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's has drafted plans for a Lifestyle Centre, including a swimming pool. With a population of 7366 and a mean age of 38, there is a great need for recreational facilities in the town. The Centre will provide a range of activities/supports for residents in the areas of aquatic, physical, recreational, cultural, and community.

The Town is also welcoming regional use of the facility, particularly those living within a particular catchment area, including Paradise, NW St. John's, Bauline, and Bell Island. The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's is the initiator of this project and hopes to partner with a number of organizations/agencies, including the Provincial Government, ACOA, Lions, Public Libraries, etc.

The Centre will be located on land adjoining the Town Hall on Thorburn Road and owned by the Town. Ever mindful of conserving energy, the Town is hoping to promote this as a "green" project as much as possible. Broad Cove Brook flows through the land on which the Centre will be situated and the Town is interested in capitalizing on any power potential of that waterway.

The Town is seeking expressions of interest into investigating harnessing the power of a slow moving river to heat the proposed swimming pool.

More information on the proposed Centre may be obtained on the town website at www.pcsp.ca
