Ongoing monitoring of honey bee health

The NLBKA Research Committee has not yet identified additional pathogen-related research of benefit to the province’s honey bees and beekeeping, especially given that testing by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the National Bee Diagnostic Centre in Beaverlodge, Alberta, is conducted on an annual basis. However, research to develop a complete profile of endemic honey bee viruses in NL may facilitate thorough long-term monitoring and assessment of the potential for pathogen spillover between Apis and non-Apis bee species. The NLBKA welcomes additional scientific research with respect to our endemic pathogens, particularly if it will advance scientific knowledge, help NL beekeepers monitor and manage pathogens, and assess the risks of pathogen spillover among Apis and non-Apis insect species.
