Recruiting Immigrants to Rural Regions of the Province

Description

Objective:

To explore what factors contribute to the recruitment and retention of immigrants in rural areas of the province.

Background:

The current immigration strategy of the province is focused on getting professional people to come to the province to work. However, this will not solve the worker shortage problem in rural communities. Although many think that there is an unemployment problem, businesses in rural communities are finding it hard to find workers for non-professional jobs. Thus, the current immigration strategy will not address these shortages with its focus on attracting professionals.

Roles for Memorial University:

Research the current labor issues and problems in rural areas and make recommendations about how these can be mitigated.
Make recommendations on how to change the immigration strategy to address the issues and needs of rural communities.
