Creating Opportunities in Fish Processing for the Bay St. George South to Port au Port area

Description

Objective:

Support local stakeholders to initiate a pilot project for a processing facility in the Bay St. George South to Port au Port area.

Background:

There are no secondary fish processing facilities in our area and there is currently a high level of unemployment. Following the Dunne Report’s identification of “strategic fish plants”, the project proposes that the area would benefit from a strategic processing facility. Workshops with fish buyers and fishers would promote a value-added industry with the intent of creating new markets and product development. The licencing requirement for the fish plant could likely be addressed by proposing an Aboriginal facility.

Roles for Memorial University:

Help with organizing workshops for local stakeholders.
