Statistical Overview of the Newfoundland Fisheries
This statistical overview of the Newfoundland fisheries from 1952 to 1985 is a background report prepared for the Royal Commission on Employment and Unemployment. The data are presented in tables and figures without an accompanying analysis. Thus it serves as an illustration of the state of the fisheries in the period after the Second World War and up until a few years before the collapse of the cod fisheries. It is comprised of seven sections, each presenting information on a separate aspect of the industry. The first section includes information on fishermen, licenses, fishing vessels, and loans. The second part is concerned with fishermens income. The third presents data on fish landings, to be followed by section on resource allocations and fish products. Section five deals with exports and market prices. The last two parts offer data on the fish processing sector and compare fisheries data by province. Despite the absence of analysis, this is an invaluable source of information for anyone interested in the Newfoundland fishing industry.
