It's How I Spent Me Youth: Scene, Subculture, and Community in the St. John's Peace-A-Chord Festival
The Peace-a-Chord festival in St. John’s has been an important platform for local alternative music and social justice issues since its inception in 1985, made possible through youth volunteers and grassroots fundraising. Through ethnographic research (or research based on participating in community events and on talking to people) and a focus on subculture and on scene (i.e. the kinds of social interactions typical within the subculture), this paper juxtaposes the nostalgic narratives of past festivals with the harsh reality of today, as the festival finds itself increasingly more maligned.
Paper given at a joint meeting of the American Folklore Society and the Folklore Studies Association of Canada, 2007
