The Bonne Bay Aquarium is unique within Memorial University in that it has been encapsulating the spirit of the Big Splash for 20 years. BBARS is an academic support unit which includes a public aquarium and routinely hosts a variety of marine-themed activities from Marine Biology and researchers from other sciences and humanities through to marine-themed artistic practices. In 2020 BBARS became part of Grenfell Campus, and has undergone a visioning and rebranding process which is currently being rolled out. In addition, the staff at BBARS have refitted and modernized the public aquarium spaces to better promote marine themed practices of all kinds.
One of our shortcomings has been that we could work on better using the public aquarium space to promote the fact that BBARS is part of Memorial University and to provide direct linkages to all the activities that take place at BBARS through a series of decals on window panes that separate the lobby and the aquarium displays in the “tank room”. The new decals supported through this initiative will provide a lasting resource to ensure that the public make the link between BBARS, Memorial University, and the other activities that go on at BBARS including, teaching and research beyond its primary mandate of public outreach.
