This relationship-building project will connect one PhD student and faculty members at both Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and Simon Fraser University with NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) and the region of Labrador West. The goal of this project is to collectively consider the topic of mining and fence-building from social science and arts perspectives, deciding together whether research of this type would be a good fit for the region. This will be accomplished mainly through a collaborative making session on the topic of mining and fences. Attendees will also be encouraged to bring their own artistic work or crafts to share. In doing so, the session will facilitate mutual learning about research interests, artistic skills, and local expertise. The workshop will be complimented by in-person meetings with organizations that may be interested in research on this topic. Should it be decided that this research is a good fit for local interests, the outcomes of this project will include a concrete research plan for the PhD student, new partnerships to guide the research, and mutual learning for the student, faculty advisors, and members of the community.
