Following the successful 2017 collaboration on the first volume of Towards an Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge by Pam Hall, Memorial University Press (formerly ISER Books) and Breakwater Books have partnered again to produce, disseminate, and promote Chapter III: Miawpukek/The Middle River. This second volume is itself a collaboration between Hall and Mi’kmaq artist Jerry Evans and countless community partners from Miawpukek (Conne River). To celebrate the culmination of this remarkable endeavour, public events will be held in communities across the province to showcase the book and share the public engagement methodologies and practices that made it possible.
Hall and Evans will travel to Conne River to officially launch the book in the community where the local knowledge was contributed and collected. Community members and contributors will have the opportunity to view the final product and celebrate the completion of this chapter with the authors. Hall and Evans will deliver public talks and workshops in Conne River, Corner Brook, St. John's, about art-making, knowledge preservation, and community engagement. They will also engage with the academic community at MUNL (St. John's and Grenfell campuses) by giving talks on community-engaged research, inter-disciplinary collaboration, and research creation methodologies. In promoting this work they hope to pass the torch to other community members and scholars to continue the work toward knowledge and cultural preservation.
