This project builds on our previous work funded through the OPE accelerator award, where we brought together researchers, trainees, and stakeholders from the construction industry for a leadership roundtable to discuss how we can support the mental health of construction workers within this province and assist with lowering the suicide rate within the industry.
Overwhelmingly, participants at this roundtable expressed the need for something to be done and the desire to take action. There was strong endorsement that the most expedient way forward would include the establishment of a Task Force to carry this initiative forward, and several agreed to serve.
As such, an Industry Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (MHSP) Task Force has been established and is comprised of 20 individuals representing the NL Construction Safety Association, SafetyNet Centre for OHS Research (Memorial University), WorkplaceNL, the OHS Division of Digital Government and ServiceNL, the NL Canadian Mental Health Association, TradesNL, construction employers and individuals with lived experience.
Our goal for this QuickStart project would be to host early Task Force meeting(s), where we can determine our Action Plan to develop and implement an industry-specific MHSP program and to establish an evaluation framework through ongoing surveillance and research.
