The Marine Institute (MI) is one of many academic institutions taking part in the Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) program, which is run by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) and funded by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) as a part of the Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program of the Canadian government. Recently, MI finished its first GSO program activity, expanding on relationships already established in Barbados to provide MI students the chance to learn firsthand about conservation and climate change mitigation initiatives in that nation. From October 9 to October 15, 2022, eight MI students from a range of majors visited Barbados.
The students were able to exchange knowledge and expertise with Sea Cadets from the Barbados Coast Guard and students from partner institution Barbados Community College (BCC) about the assembly and deployment of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs). Through funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), MI had previously provided BCC with ROV kits and related equipment to establish the partnership between MI and BCC, promote skills related to the Blue Economy, and offer opportunities for MI students to develop their global skills through collaboration with students in other parts of the world. The trip also included a visit to the Folkestone Marine Reserve, a meeting with Blue Shell Productions to discuss the DigiFish project, which uses cutting-edge data analytics and digital technologies to support the use of the ecosystem approach to fisheries in Barbados, and a visit to the Walkers Reserve, a regenerated quarry that has been done so in order to boost biodiversity and co-create self-sustaining systems. The team also went to a meeting with the Barbados Coastal Zone Management Unit to talk about using ROVs to protect and restore coral reefs.
