Natural materials (bone, plant fibre, skin, etc) present unique properties because of the hierarchy in their structure: different structural elements at different length scales. We aim to better understand how these natural materials develop, and to then be able to design new materials optimized for applications in the biomedical field. Applying techniques used in areas as diverse as nano-engineering and biochemistry, we have developed several methods to create materials in the laboratory which mimic aspects of materials found in nature.
