Confucius and Confucianism: The Essentials
This book is an introduction to the life and teaching of Confucius. The available sources are examined and Confucius' teachings about moral behaviour for the individual and social and political ideas are described. Confucius' ideas were elaborated on by his immediate followers, Mencius and Xunzi. Throughout traditional China scholars began new approaches to Confucius' thought and this has continued in the modern "New Confucian" movement. The book concludes with questions about Confucianism and modernity, democracy, and the status of women. Published as: Rainey, L.D. Confucius and Confucianism. Wiley-Blackwell, 2010.
