Application of Isotope Ratio Tracing to Source Environmental Lead Exposure in Children from Pre-1970s Housing in St. John’s, NL

Lay Summary

Lead isotope tracers will be used to discriminate sources of residential lead exposure in children living in a range of housing stock predating 1970 in St. John’s, NL. The project will utilize blood and environmental samples to be collected as part of a planned biomonitoring survey to determine children’s exposure levels to lead contaminated soil and house dust. Project results will inform decision-making on lead exposure reduction and mitigation at homeowner and municipal levels and be directly transferable to the understanding of health risks in other communities with a similar residential lead legacy.
