Advanced Exploration Drilling Technology Project

Lay Summary 

The Advanced Exploration Drilling Technology project is an applied research and development project lead by Memorial with industry partnership including ACOA, RDC, Husky Energy, Suncor Energy to investigate and develop advanced drilling technology. This project is undertaking an experimental and numerical investigation of vibration-assisted rotary drilling (VARD) leading to the development of a prototype drilling tool. Our research emphasizes four aspects:

* Fundamental penetration mechanisms and optimization
* Influence of bit vibration and percussion on penetration rate (ROP) and bit wear
* Design and develop Vibration Assisted Rotary Drilling (VARD) tools
* Proof-of-concept field trials of VARD tools

We can potentially improve drilling ROP and extend bit runs, enhance utilization of lower capacity drilling rigs and indirect applications to mitigate drilling vibrations.
