Baking as Biography: A Life Story in Recipes

Lay Summary

An auto-ethnographic analysis of a recipe collection compiled by my mother, Laurene Tye. Rooted in baking traditions of the Maritime Provinces, the recipes reveal ways in which my mother understood and performed her roles as a mother, minister's wife and friend. The collection demonstrates how my mother, and women of her generation, was confined by these role expectations and responsibilities at the same time they sometimes resisted and subverted them.
