Life Writing, Citizenship and the Body: Corporeal Virtue in the Consultation Letters to Samuel-Auguste Tissot

Lay Summary

A large-scale study of medical consultation letters addressed to Samuel-Auguste Tissot. This rich corpus, located in Lausanne, Switzerland, contains some 1200 letters addressed to Tissot by patients from around Europe (and North America!). Highly detailed and often quite personal, these letters can be seen as micro-autobiographies of the bodily self. I am interested in understanding the ways in which individuals during this period framed their corporeal subjectivity and how this subjectivity contributed to their understandings of citizenship and virtue.
