This event was created to celebrate all things water in Newfoundland and Labrador. The 'Ode to Water' event ran in conjunction with the UN recognized World Water Day on March 22, 2014. So many times the public does not recognize the connection between research occurring at Memorial University (both the St. John's and Grenfell campuses) and how this research impacts their everyday life. It was the intent of this event to connect the research project entitled "Exploring Solutions for Sustainable Rural Drinking Water Systems" with the general public in a fun non-academic way. The evening was made up of a full set of poets, musicians, story tellers and researchers presenting pieces on their interactions and values towards water. It was an event open to the public and was widely attended, with over 50 attendees. This event made a positive difference in the community by giving citizens the stage to voice their concerns about water issues. It also connected Grenfell researchers with other water minded community groups and the general public. Furthermore, the connections made from this event have built relationships with the City of Corner Brook, ACAP-Humber Arm, Ducks Unlimited and Grenfell Campus that have already resulted in new collaborations. It is intended that this same group of collaborators will partner on World Water Day events for 2015.
