Uncovering the invisible: microscopy and mushroom identification workshop

Lay Summary

The microscopy workshop held at Grenfell Campus, MUN, was a collaborative public engagement event connecting the Foray NL, the Bonne Bay Marine Station in Gros Morne, and Grenfell Campus MUN. The proposed workshop was meant to further strengthen the connection between the Foray NL and Memorial University and help develop valuable microscopy skills of the public participants, improving the ability of the members of the amateur Mushroom Foray NL community initiative to properly identify local fungi and other components of the boreal ecosystem (plants, algae, lichens, or insects). The workshop was a success, with two internationally-renowned experts visiting as leaders, and fifteen participants, including members of general public, faculty, staff and students of Grenfell Campus. The novel microscopy suite recently set up at the Herbarium of Grenfell Campus was instrumental for the success of the workshop, allowing simultaneous demonstration of intricate microscopic techniques to all participants. We are looking forward to conducting such workshops on a regular basis in the future.
