Northern Getaway: the tourism film and selling Canada

Lay Summary

Drawing from the fields of film, tourism studies, and cultural history, this project examines the shifting ways in which the tourism industry utilized US and Canadian film productions (both private and public ventures) to construct and circulate a recognizable brand for Canada. Understanding the development of the tourism film – which we define as fiction and nonfiction productions (screened in both theatrical and nontheatrical settings) intended to advertise commercial travel – reveals how the drive to stimulate tourism through film culture helped articulate our national identity.
