Grain: Emmedia Anthology of Critical Texts

Lay Summary

As part of EMMEDIA’s mandate to push the boundaries of media arts discourse, the organization nurtures a growing community of writers through its publishing program. This volume is the result of a two-day writing workshop with guest instructor Chris Frey, followed by a long process of text development with Editor/Mentor Jennifer McVeigh.

The United Nations designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity and this concept is interpreted through a broad lens, incorporating notions of growth, sustainability and diversity as it pertains to community, city and identity, as well as ecology. The texts collected here are germinated from the seeds of the Grain thematic, but grow in rhizomatic, unpredictable patterns. The essays investigate artworks and events presented at EMMEDIA and elsewhere, and explore ideas such as the growth and preservation of communities that nourish artists.
