Lay Summary
This project was a multi-partner, grassroots, engagement project to organize and carry out a traditional Mi'kmaw Mawio'mi (gathering) in the Bay of Islands area (Elmastukwek is the Mi'kmaw name for the Bay of Islands region). Beginning with a core group of a men's big-drum group, the men sought out assistance from a variety of individuals and groups including traditional knowledge keepers from Mi'kmaw communities, staff from Qalipu First Nation, staff from Grenfell Campus, the town of Benoit's Cove, and others. The Mawio'mi took place over a two-day period. This Mawio'mi helped to encourage other communities from holding their own Mawio'mis, and the central region now has their own Mawio'mi as well.
