Outdoor Inclusion Summit 2019: Bringing Our Paths Together

Lay Summary

This project brought together academics, students, community service providers, and people with
disabilities to move the process of outdoor inclusion in Newfoundland and Labrador forward through a
day-long meeting in May 2019. Currently, in the province, there are only a few organizations offering inclusive outdoor
programming (ex. Easter Seals and Nordic NL) and many more that wish to provide a broader spectrum
of outdoor opportunities to people with disabilities. Professor Tomás Alyward from the Institute of
Technology, Tralee, Ireland received a Dobbin Atlantic Scholarship to spend three weeks in the
province from May 14-June 5, 2019. The purpose of his visit was to share his expertise in outdoor inclusive
programming as well as promote resources developed by the UNESCO World Chair in "Transforming the
Lives of People with Disabilities, their families and communities, Through Physical Education, Sport,
Recreation and Fitness." Professor Alward and Dr. Loeffler presented a workshop at the Recreation
NL provincial conference in Grand Falls-Winsor on outdoor inclusion and made several site
visits to programs that are currently offering or want to offer inclusive outdoor programs. Building on this
momentum, we offered a day-long summit entitled "Outdoor Inclusion Summit: Bringing our
Paths Together" where we invited community recreation leaders, people with disabilities, municipal
decisions makers, academics, students, and outdoor recreation organizations to come together to further
build working relationships, understand current capacity, and to set a vision and strategic plan for cross-organizational
initiatives (such as outdoor inclusion equipment lending). 43 participants attended the Outdoor Inclusion Summit. Kim White, inclusion activist, delivered the opening keynote following by an address by Professor Alyward. The afternoon consisted of six interactive workshops demonstrating inclusive outdoor recreation practice.
