Biocultural and archaeological legacies at L'Anse aux Meadows

Lay Summary

This project seeks to reinvigorate archaeological research at L'Anse aux Meadows (LAM) through an examination of chronological legacy data, renewed radiocarbon dating, open area excavation and fine-grained environmental analysis of a cultural horizon discovered in a peat bog adjacent to Norse ruins in 2018.

The objectives are twofold: (1) to improve our understanding of the chronology of occupation at LAM in an attempt to establish whether it was ever a shared zone of Norse-Indigenous interaction, and (2) to analyze insect and plant fossils preserved in the bog to reconstruct long-term human-environment interactions and biodiversity change.
