The Nature of Science Institute: Professional Learning of K-12 Science Teachers

Lay Summary

The Nature of Science (NOS) involves understanding “what science is and how science works. The researchers in the area of science education have explored K-12 students’ and teachers’ views about NOS and identified the need to support science teachers’ professional learning so that they can develop an understanding of NOS among K-12 students. Realizing the need for bringing NOS focus for science teachers in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) K-12 classrooms, we plan to develop and offer a pilot professional learning (PL) event: The Nature of Science (NOS) Teacher Institute. Through this quick start fund, we plan to initiate a partnership between:

(1) science teacher educators (Dr. Saiqa Azam & Dr. Karen Goodnough) from MUN Faculty of Education,
(2) President (Yvonne Dawe) Mathematics and Science Special Interest Council (MSSIC) of Newfoundland and;
Labrador Teacher Association (NLTA), and;
(3) the Education Specialist, Professional Learning (Craig White) from Let’s Talk Science, a non-profit origination.

As a working group, we plan to create a prototype NOS Kit and lesson plan/activities to implement in the K-12 classrooms. We will plan a pilot professional learning event for a small number of K-12 science teachers to receive their feedback on the prototype NOS Kits and activities.

NOTE: The events can be virtual/face-to-face depending on the COVID-19 Alert levels in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
