The basic tools of management for North American fisheries scientists have been population dynamics models. Although ecosystem-based management cannot yet match the quantitativeness of a population dynamics approach, it does offer an alternative that addresses the interactions that operate at multiple scales throughout a fisheries ecosystem. This essay offers a definition of ecosystem-based management and suggests some necessary conditions for adopting this approach in the northwest Atlantic.
