Management of Municipal and Industrial Wastewaters

Lay Summary

In this project we are studying the impacts of municipal and industrial waste waters on the marine (ocean) environment. There are a number of challenges in assessing environmental impacts including; determining the chemical make-up of discharge(s), detecting/measuring low levels of toxins in the environment, assessing which contaminants persist and negatively affect the environment, and measuring the scale of impact. All of these issues must be addressed before one can implement waste water management/treatment technologies. In this research we are developing detection technologies that can detect and measure low levels of environmental contaminants and track their persistence in the environment. From this work we will develop treatment and management technologies to address the contamination issues.
