Norbait Trials - Georges Bank

Lay Summary

Longline harvesters in Nova Scotia are presently experiencing a high bycatch of Atlantic cod while directing for haddock on George's Bank. Norbait is manufactured by the company Norbait DA, located on the West Coast of Norway. One of the advantages of Norbait is that it has been shown to be species-selective.

The Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association has been testing the Norbait fish bait 700E in the Gulf of Maine since February 2004 and has reported encouraging results. The organization has observed a cod bycatch consistently below 1% when using the artificial bait, compared to a 7-9% bycatch when using traditional baits (CCCHFA, unpublished). The purpose of this project was to conduct preliminary observations on the utility of Norbait as a species-selective bait for haddock, in an effort to reduce the incidental capture of cod.
