Theories of Bilingual Education: The Implications of Canadian Immersion Education for Bilingual Instruction in Chinese Universities
This study is intended to help Chinese educators, researchers, and practitioners to apply the successful Canadian experience in immersion language teaching to Chinese language teaching realities, and run bilingual education programs in Chinese educational settings. The Canadian language immersion approach was introduced into China a number of years ago and there are now bilingual educational programs in kindergartens, elementary schools, and secondary schools, all of which were based on the Canadian immersion model. As those students enroll in universities and colleges in China, they will need similar programs at that level. To cater to the needs of those students, it is essential to work out an overall plan for bilingual education that takes into consideration pre-school, elementary school, secondary school and university education. This book provides an overview of the research on language immersion in Canada and addresses the problem of how to link college immersion programs with high school immersion programs.
